A `path` selector that is malformed, does not resolve, or selects a leaf that will not coerce.

that will not coerce.
selector is the whole selector as written, not the step that failed;
message says which step that was. One error class covers both a bad
selector and a selector that does not fit the document, because path has
no useful partial result to hand back either way.
